Hola Primos

I am asking for you expertise on the following; I have been looking all over for information regarding Martin de Esparza and Juan De Esparza (father and son). Juan de Esparza got married in Aguascalientes in 1752 with Ana Gertrudis Alonso De Los Hinojos (daughter of Manuel Alonso De Los Hinojos and Ma. Efigenia Ramirez). Juan de Esparza's parents were; Martin De Esparza and Manuela Preciado according to Juan's marriage record. Martin and Manuela had another son named Manuel Martin who was born in 1706 and died in 1790, there is a Juan Joseph Martin De Esparza in the Family search record, but it says "En El Sagrario Antes De La Asuncion" and I can't figure out how to get that record (What does Antes de la Asuncion means?). Now, if Juan De Esparza was married in 1752, I figure that he must have been born around 1724-1730. His marriage record establishes that he was from Calvillo and his son Joseph Santiago De Esparza married to Maria Munoz De La Barba in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco on 1791 was from the Villa De Aguascalientes. There are around four different Juanes in that same time period but only two from the Aguascalientes area the other two are from Cienega de Mata Ojuelos and Guanajuato and their mother was a Maria Concepcion not a Manuela. Which creates another problem since in 1731 a Jacinto Martin Esparza married to a Manuela de Luarca or Alorca (their son Manuel Martin died in 7 August 1748), There is a "De Esparza married to a Manuela De La Cruz which had a son named Po Juan De Esparza Cruz on 10 May 1725, and another Xacinto Martin De Esparza married to a Manuela de Los Reies on 18 August 1709. Now if Manuel Martin, Martin De Esparza and Manuela Preciado's son was born in 1706 according to his death record, that puts his parents birth around the 1675-1685's and the only Martins on that time period are Martin Ruiz De Esparza y Sotelo de Xaen and/or Xacinto Martin De Esparza (Matiana De Esparza with Alonso Martin), or were there any other Martin around that same time period? I will appreciate it very much if any of you could give me any information or any guide as to what should I do to resolve these missing links in order to complete my connection to the patriarch Lope Ruiz De Esparza. In advance I thank you.

Hi Bertha,

Congrats on getting this far on your Ruíz de Esparza line. I descend from Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos and María Efigenia Ramírez aka Martínez de Alarcón or Martín-Alarcón. Would you happen to have the parents of María Inés Muñoz de la Barba, who married Joseph Santiago Ruíz de Esparza? I take it you descend from the Yahualica line of the Ruíz de Esparza. Santiago and Inés lived in various locations, Jalostotitlán, Aguascalientes, Yahualica, etc.

As far as Martín Ruíz de Esparza and Manuela Preciado, I have nothing beyond this point. We need to locate a document, perhaps a final will and testament, or a death record for this Martín. “Antes de la Asunción” basically means originally the parish was formally known as “Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de María de Aguascalientes” not sure why the extractors did this, it can cause confusion if someone is not informed on history.

Right now, I am wondering if Manuela perhaps is a relative of the Preciado de Elizalde a family that compounded their names in the late XVII century in Aguascalientes; Diego Preciado and Beatríz López de Elizalde, a good number of parish officers descend from this line.

As for, Martín Ruíz de Esparza y Sotelo de Xaén was son of Martín Ruíz de Esparza and Francisca de Xaén who was baptized 2 Jul 1675 in Aguascalientes. He later married Gertrudis Martínez Calvillo daughter of Nicolás Martínez Calvillo and Josefa de Velasco on 15 Feb 1699.

As for the last one, Jacinto Martín Esparza really Jacinto Martín Mateos or any of the following combinations Martín y Mateos, Martín Ruíz de Esparza or Martín de Esparza was a compound named that was formed when Alonso Martín Mateos son of Diego Martín Mateos and Teresa de las Ruelas and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza daughter of Pedro Ruíz de Esparza and Juana Lozano married on 29 Dec 1666 in Aguascalientes. This Jacinto belongs to the Martín Mateos clan not the Ruíz de Esparza, even though they are related through this marriage. Another researcher that is very well informed on Aguascalientes would be Bill Figueroa. Don't give up your only 2-3 generations before connecting to Lope Ruiz de Esparza.

I hope this helps a bit, some history too.

Hi Daniel,
Thank yo so much for that information. The parents of Maria (Ines?) Munoz de la Barba were Estevan Munoz de la Barba and Juana Gertrudis Perez Gallo. Estevans' parents were; Francisco Munoz de la Barba and Joachina Casillas. Juana Gertrudis' parents were; Josef Perez Gallo and Angela Fernandez. I believe Estevan was related to Ygnacio Munoz de la Barba and Ma. De Dolores Munoz ... since these two were the witneses in their wedding. As far as Maria (Ines) is concerned, I could not find her birth record for the longest time but recently I found, or I believe it has to be her; a Maria (Ruth) Munoz de la Barra baptized on (16 Jan 1775)so it must have been a mistake on the name.
My Esparza line was mostly from Yahualica, Ixtlahuacan, Cuquio and by the 1800's many of them moved to the Moyahua/Palmarejo Area in Zacatecas.

In re; to Manuela Preciado, I found a Nicolas Preciado married to a Maria De la cruz in April 10, 1684 but can not find any of their children. If they did she could have been around the age to be married by the 1706's. Well I do not know just guessing//

Bertha,

A lot of the records that say Del Sagrario, Antes de la Asuncion,
Aguascalientes also say Cieneguilla, Aguascalientes, Mexico and they also
show a source film number of 299530. In the familysearch site under
Aguascalientes there is a page of films for Sagrario (Incluye Hacienda de
Cieneguilla). I went into one of those films and did a search of one of the
names found in it and confirmed the record shows up as being in 299530. I
brought this up since it can be a way to identify the Aguascalientes
volumes since they don't have the film number on the first page. The record
for Juan Joseph de Esparza is at

Hola Armando,
I just search for the information under the address you gave me. Thank you very much, now I'll be able to look for those files I could not find. Thank you again.

Hi Daniel,
Me quede con la duda, I hope you do not mind me asking, How is it that you are related to Manuel Alonso De los Hinojos, was it through Santiago Alonso and Ana Maria Perez Gallo?
Bertha Alicia Casanova

Hi Bertha,

Manuel was the son of (according to the Marriage Information taken on 7 Jan 1722) Bartolomé Alonso de los Hinojos and Juana de Amador residents of Santa María de los Lagos. I believe Bartolomé would have died in Lagos de Moreno and born in Aguascalientes. I do not know who his parents were, but keep in mind they were born in the mid XVII century. (Without proof) he was probably the son of Juan Alonso de los Hinojos and Isabel Ramírez who married in Santa María de los Lagos on 22 May 1652. I still need to verify and prove this link. Juana’s parents were Gabriel Gallegos and Juliana Gutiérrez Guerrero. This Amador/Gutiérrez Guerrero family was studied by Mariano González-Leal. I still do not know how Amador fits in.

I descend from Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos, twice in the following manner vía my mother. My maternal grandparents are second cousins, in the third degree of consanguinity as great-grandchildren of D. Mariano de Camino y Martínez de Sotomayor.

I. Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos married firstly according to the marriage information taken on 7 Jan 1722 in Aguascalientes to María Efigenia Ramírez aka Martínez de Alarcón. Secondly, he married Francisca Gutiérrez-Durón on 13 Sep 1752 in Aguascalientes. From Manuel and Efigenia: While you descend from Ana Gertrudis who married Juan Ruíz de Esparza I descend from her brother

II. José Tomás Alonso de los Hinojos who married Juana Gertrudis de Castañeda on 4 Feb 1754 in Aguascalientes. They had

III. María Josefa Jacoba Alonso de los Hinojos who married José Gregorio López-Valdés on 25 Jun 1788 in Aguascalientes. They had

IV. María Marcelina López-Valdés who married José Antonio Martínez de Sotomayor on 26 May 1819 in Aguascalientes. They had

V. María de los Dolores Martínez de Sotomayor who married Eugenio de Camino-Trasgallo on 11 Jul 1849 in Aguascalientes and veiled in Calvillo. They had

VI. José Mariano de Camino (Trasgallo) who married Arcadia de Soto on 15 May 1874 in Señor San José, Calvillo.

VII. Celso de Camino Trasgallo m. Lorenza López Eugenio de Camino Trasgallo m. Petronila Vázquez

VIII. Antonio Camino m. Maria Guadalupe López de Elizalde Sara de Camino Trasgallo m. Rafael García-Rojas

IX. Antonio de Camino Trasgallo (second cousins) Carolina García-Rojas

X. My mother. Ampelia de Camino García-Rojas

XI. Daniel Méndez de Torres Camino

I hope this answers your question,

Daniel Méndez-Camino

Thanks again for the information. It is nice to know that we are "primos" after all. I have another question for you. I have found several discrepancies on the birth or marriage certificates of our ancestors. For instance; in the birth certificate of Catharina de Esparza born Dic. 1, 1755 she was categorized as "Española Castiza" and next to her legit... parents; Juan de Esparza ("coyote") was written and after Gertrudis Alonso de los Hinojos; "Espanoles" in plural. When my GGGG-grandparent Joseph Santiago was baptized on Feb. 5 1760, Joseph Santiago and his parents were categorized as "Españoles" just as it was when they got married on Abr. 10, 1752, but when Ana Getrudis Alonso died on Ago. 31, 1790, "India " was written next to her name. It shows that she was the wife of Juan de Esparza and daughter of Manuel Alonso de los Hinojos but why would they have put india next to her if all the previous records she was categorized as "Española"? I would understand "Castiza" or even "Mestiza" but why "India"? Now I now that a "Coyote: was supposed to be the son of a "Mestizo and an Indian" so was Juan de Esparza (son of Manuela Preciado and married to Ana Gertrudis Alonso ..a "Coyote" or an Español? I did find a Juan de Esparza born Jul 2, 1731 "coyote" son of "difunto Esparza" and Maria Concepcion in Guanjuato and another in Cienega de Mata Ojuelos born on Jul 8, 1733 hijo de "de Esparza and Maria de la Concepcion" as is written in the Church record. Do you have any information on this. ???
Bertha Alicia Casanova

Bertha,
Regarding some of your ancestors appearing as 'indios' instead of the 'expected caste' based on the levels of admixture between racial groups, is not uncommon. Remember, the priest would assess and decide to which group the child, the bride or the groom, belong to based upon physical atributes (skin color, type and color hair, eye shape, etc.), not upon the actual pedigree. Several years ago we discussed this briefly in NR and gave examples how for the same couple the children would be indios, mestizos, coyotes, lobos, and mulatos.

I hope this will be useful in your search.

Daniel,

What is your source for "Alonso Martín Mateos son of Diego Martín Mateos and Teresa de las Ruelas and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza daughter of Pedro Ruíz de Esparza and Juana Lozano".

I am at brick wall for the parents of Alonzo Martin Mateos and Matiana Ruiz de Esparza. I havent been able to locate any dispensas pertaining to the couple, they didnt leave wills in the Aguascaliente online archive, and no parents listed on the marriage record.

Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Alex
