Presentations from the Nueva Galicia conference this weekend

By arturoramos - Posted on 08 March 2010

I wanted to thank Helyn, Maria, Kitty and everyone else who went to great lengths to organize what turned out to be a great conference and a great reunion of wonderful people and adept genealogists.

Having failed to have handouts for my presentation, I have posted them online on Nuestros Ranchos. Kitty Cortez's and Stanley Lucero's presentations are also in the same folder.

Thanks again to the organizers and it was a pleasure meeting all of the attendees and putting faces to so many names I had known only over the internet.

I also would like to give a big "Thanks" to the organizers and attendees of the Nueva Galicia Conference....I had a wonderful time getting to know everyone in person. Even though I have been doing this for the past 20 years, I'm always learning something new. I love helping others "crack the mysterious genealogy code", as I call it "cracking the code" to their ancestry.

Rose

Thank You Rose for your contribution to our first conference, it was very nice to meet you at last.

Saludos,
Alicia

Arturo,

I enjoyed your matrilineal naming practices presentation as posted. I was intrigued by the maternal surnames that had "o" in them, e.g. Haro o Saudedo.

In this light, can you comment on the following, particularly the mother of
the groom, understanding that the groom is illegitimate? I don't understand the "o digo" part.

"Francisco Barrios con Maria Cruz Reyes 3/30/1880" (Civil Marriage
Registration, Valparaiso, Zacatecas)

"Francisco, 22 anos, jornalero, hijo natural de Matias Barrios, difunto, y de
Guillerma Barrios o digo Sanchez"

Thanks,

Ed

Ed:

In my presentation, the use of the "o" as in "Maria Haro o Saucedo" is merely to designate that the person used both of those surnames. As in examples you have probably run across, some people switched back and forth between surnames throughout their lives.

In your example, I am not sure, but I would venture to guess that the priest simply made a transcription error and rather than make his book look sloppy with text crossed out simply corrected himself. I have seen similar entries and the name after the "o digo" or "me corrigo" is usually the correct name.

I have now posted Rose Hardy's and George Fulton's presentations in the file folder as well.

Rose's presentation was a review of the 1648 Aguascalientes census and George's presentation is on the use of software to produce genealogical reports.

Again, all of the presentations are available at:

Wonderful conference, great knowing people, like Arturo stated: "Putting
faces to all the names" It was great meeting all of you and learning,
sharing and eating with all of you.

Thanks to all of the organizers of this conference and for the invitation to share some of my research regarding the Tlaxcalans. I enjoyed meeting so many people dedicated to learning about their ancestors and look forward to other opportunities to share and compare information.

I know that we will eventually link our ancestors and verify that we are primos.

I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, it is amazing how much we do
not know, so you just open another door to our curiosity, I hope some day I
can find the main roots.
